Social Skills Connection Group for Teens in Los Angeles and online throughout California

Finding Your People Feels Hard. It Doesn’t Have to Stay That Way.

The teenage years are supposed to be a time of connection, but for a lot of teens they feel more like a constant performance. Worrying about what to say, how to act, whether people actually like you, or why it always feels easier to stay home than show up. If your teen is struggling socially, feeling left out, or just not quite sure how to fit in, they are not alone, and there is real support available.

Our Teen Social Skills Group at Harper’s Haven is a welcoming, therapist led space where teens can practice the skills that make relationships easier, build genuine confidence, and connect with other young people who get it.

Is This Group Right for Your Teen?

This group is a good fit for teens who:

  • Feel anxious or uncomfortable in social situations

  • Struggle to start or keep conversations going

  • Have a hard time reading social cues or understanding unspoken rules

  • Feel left out, lonely, or like they do not quite belong anywhere

  • Have difficulty making or keeping friends

  • Tend to avoid group settings, school events, or social activities

  • Are managing social anxiety, ADHD, or simply a quieter, more introverted personality

  • Want to feel more confident and comfortable around peers

Many teens in this group are simply navigating the normal but difficult social challenges that come with adolescence.

Why Social Skills Can Be So Challenging for Teens

Adolescence is one of the most socially complex periods of life. The brain is still developing, peer relationships become more important than ever, and the pressure to fit in can feel overwhelming. Social media adds another layer, creating constant comparison, fear of missing out, and the pressure to present a curated version of yourself at all times.

For some teens, the social world feels like everyone else received a rulebook they never got. They may replay conversations in their head, feel awkward in groups even when they want to connect, or shut down when they feel embarrassed or misunderstood. Over time, these experiences can lead to increased anxiety, low self-esteem, isolation, and a belief that something is fundamentally wrong with them. None of that is true, and group therapy is one of the most effective tools for changing it.

What Your Teen Will Work On

Our teen social skills group is not a lecture or a class. It is an interactive, supportive experience where teens practice real skills in real time, with a therapist guiding the process. Topics and skills covered in group include:

Starting and maintaining conversations so talking to people feels less like a guessing game and more like something they can actually do.

Active listening and empathy so teens can build deeper, more genuine connections rather than just surface-level interactions.

Reading social cues and body language so they feel more confident navigating the unspoken rules of social situations at school, at work, or with peers.

Setting boundaries and saying no in a way that feels honest and respectful without jeopardizing their relationships.

Managing social anxiety in the moment including what to do when they freeze up, their mind goes blank, or they feel like everyone is watching them.

Conflict resolution and repair so disagreements with friends or peers do not have to mean the end of a relationship.

Building self-confidence and self-worth that does not depend on other people’s approval or validation.

Understanding online versus in-person communication and how to navigate both in healthy ways.

Why Group, Not Just Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy is valuable, but group therapy offers something unique: a live, low stakes environment where teens can actually practice social skills with real peers, get real time feedback, and realize they are not the only one going through this.

In a group setting, teens get to:

Feel less alone. Hearing other teens share similar struggles is often the first time a young person realizes their experience is not shameful or unusual. That shift alone can be powerful.

Practice in a safe space. The group becomes a place to try new things, make mistakes, and grow without the social stakes of a school hallway or lunch table.

Learn from each other. Teens often take in feedback and perspective from peers differently than they do from adults. The group dynamic makes learning feel natural rather than instructional.

Build real connection. Many teens form meaningful bonds within the group itself, which becomes its own experience of belonging and friendship.

Gain confidence that transfers. Because the skills are practiced with actual people in real conversations, teens leave with confidence they can use right away in the rest of their lives.

A Note for Parents

It can be hard to watch your teen struggle socially, especially when you can see how much they want to connect but do not know how. You may have heard things like “I just don’t know how to talk to people” or “nobody likes me” or simply noticed them withdrawing more and more. Your concern is valid, and reaching out for support is one of the most meaningful things you can do for them.

Here is what to expect when your teen joins the group. Groups are small, intentionally kept to allow every teen to participate and feel seen. All groups are facilitated by a therapist trained in adolescent development and group dynamics. Sessions are held online, so your teen can join from home, which often makes it easier for anxious teens to show up in the first place. Everything shared in group is confidential, with the same exceptions that apply to all therapy (safety concerns).

You do not need a referral. You can reach out directly to get started.
